DEATH COMES TO OLDEST MAN IN SEVIER COUNTY

Neils Christensen Lee, Age 93, Dies After Short Illness

Niels Christensen Lee, to our knowledge the oldest resident
of Sevier County, passed away Tuesday morning at the the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. D.P. Jensen, with whom he had lived the past seven years. He was ninety-three years of age on the first of January, and had spent fifty-five years of his long career as a resident and pioneer builder of Sevier County. His death came after a short illness. He had been confined to his bed only since Friday. On Christmas day he had said to his son-in-law, "Well, Dan, I guess this will be my last Christmas. I have had a pretty good time and I do not know why I should stay longer. Of course, I want to stay until my next birthday on the first of January, and then I am not so particular about living longer. His life was well spent, and his congenial spirit and sense of humor remained with him to the last.

Funeral services will be held at the Elsinore meeting house Sunday at 2 P.M.

Niels Christensen Lee was born January 1, 1837, at Ledet, Horby Sogn, Denmark. His marriage to Anna Marie Jacobsen took place April 30, 1861, and to this union were born eight children, of whom one son Fred Lee, preceded the father in death. Those surviving are Jens Jacob Christensen Lee of Albert Lea, Minnesota; Christian C. Lee of Lethbridge, Canada; Christie Lee of Las Vegas, Nevada; Mrs. Hannah Hirsche of Warner, Canada; Mrs. Matilda Jensen of Richfield, Mrs. Emma Nelson and Mrs. Dora Ross of Warner, Canada.

In his native country Mr. Lee became familiar with the trade of carpenter and builder, in which work he continued to engage after coming to the United States. While in Denmark he served in the Danish Army, enlisting February 1, 1864, during the Danish-Prussian war. During the course of his service in the army he was for some time held a captive by the Prussians at Aerfort, Germany. He emigrated to the United States with his family, arriving April 12, 1869, and settling at Albert Lea, Minnesota. Here he and his family became converts to the L.D.S. church, which they joined December 29, 1874. The following year they came to Utah, arriving at Richfield in October, 1875. In the spring of 1876 the family moved to Elsinore. He became the first President of the town of Elsinore, November 7, 1893. He was water master of the Elsinore Canal for a period of the seven years, and of the Sevier river for three years. His activities were varied. He served subsequently as official, builder, carpenter, butcher, veterinarian and casket maker.
