William Carnes was age 21 and a farmer when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on June 2, 1863, at Boston, Massachusetts, for a term of one year, as a Seaman, to the credit of Weston, Massachusetts. He served on the Receiving Ship OHIO and aboard the USS MONTGOMERY. He was taken prisoner on January 7, 1864, and died of chronic diarrhea as a Prisoner of War at Camp Sumter, Andersonville, Georgia.
