CANTERBURY - Ronald "Ron" Meade died Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008, at the Concord Regional Visiting Nurse Association's Hospice House.

He was born in Sharon, Pa., the son of Richard E. and Evelyn (Ulp) Meade. He attended Youngstown University and New York University.

He was active in motor sports for more than 40 years in numerous public relations, marketing and public service areas.

He began his career in advertising at Doyle, Dane, Bernback in New York. He wrote on motor sports for the opinion-ed page for the Boston Globe. He was public relations director for Daytona International Speedway, executive secretary for the World Challenge for Endurance Drivers, executive for the Organization of American States Sports Committee and was Daytona Speedway's racing liaison with Corning Glass Works for the reopening of Watkins Glen International Grand Prix track.

He worked with Skip Barber Racing to create the Barber Saab Pro Series and Skip Barber BMW Advanced Driving School and modernization of the Lime Rock Park road racing circuit. He joined New Hampshire International Speedway in October of 1989 as marketing and public relations director. Most recently he was director of New Projects at New Hampshire International Speedway, now New Hampshire Motor Speedway, the first super speedway to be built in more than 25 years when it opened in 1990.

Ron was active in many civic affairs and served on the Governor's Summit Task Force on Travel and Tourism, was chairman of the States Joint Promotional Program, a member of the States Advisory Committee on Travel and Tourism, a member of the New Hampshire Travel Council Board of Directors, board president of the Lakes Region Association, past president of Southern New Hampshire Convention and Visitors Bureau, and he also served six years on the board of the American Red Cross in Concord.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Gail; two daughters, Linda Meade of Orlando, Fla., and Susan Meade of Davidson, N.C.; his mother, Evelyn of Liberty, Ohio; a brother, Gary of Daytona Beach, Fla.; several cousins, Diane Bulick of Brookfield, Ohio, Bonnie Hryeinak of Brookfield, Ohio, Mary Lou Krauss of Illinois and Margaret Goldberg, Margery Appletin and Janet Banner, all of Ohio; and many, many friends!

Services will be held privately.

Memorial donations may be made to the Imus Cattle Ranch for Kids with Cancer, Ribera, N.M.; or to the Concord Regional Visiting Nurse Association Hospice House, P.O. Box 1797, Concord 03302.

The Cremation Society of New Hampshire is in charge of arrangements.
