Roy is the son of George James and Gracie (nee Silvers) Campbell. He was born in a tent near the Arkansas River during the time that Tulsa was still a part of Creek Nation Indian Territory. (Oklahoma became the 46th state on 16 November 1907.)

On 24 September 1932, he married Lela and they had fifteen children. Five died in infancy or childhood and they raised five girls and five boys on their farm in Catoosa, Oklahoma. Their farm is now owned by a construction company, but their (condemned) house still stands and can be seen from Highway 266.

He was better known as Roy, except by his grandchildren, nieces and nephews who all called him "Papa".
