This child, here called Alfred Butterfield, died at the age of 1 yr, ? days (Stone difficult to read.) The name of this child was really Alfred TAYLOR, son of Thomas & Melvina(Aubin)Taylor. He was born in E. Jaffrey, NH and baptized as Joseph Alfred COUTURIER, Aug 13, 1889,in St Patrick Church, E.Jaffrey, Cheshire Co., NH. His sponsors were Pierre AUBE & Denise COUTURIER.( Note: Denise at that time, was known in the record as COUTURIER, NOT Butterfield and NOT Taylor. MHB)

The family (Couturier dit Verville, in Canada)) had lived in Jaffrey, NH. where for some years after emigrating from Quebec, they had been called BUTTERFIELD, because the grandfather had worked for a man named "Butterfield", and was referred to as "the man at Butterfield's." The family had long since ceased to be known as "Butterfield" and Alfred's brothers & sisters have remarked on this. The most likely explanation for this is that the carver had known the family as "Butterfield", although they had been "Taylor" for quite a while. And once carved---.
Alfred died in South Ashburnham, Mass., August 5, 1890. He
was buried in Calvary Cemetery Winchendon, MA. His tombstone says 'BUTTERFIELD', not TAYLOR! And not COUTURIER.
