The family (Couturier dit Verville, in Canada)) had lived in Jaffrey, NH. where for some years after emigrating from Quebec, they had been called BUTTERFIELD, because the grandfather had worked for a man named "Butterfield", and was referred to as "the man at Butterfield's." The family had long since ceased to be known as "Butterfield" and Alfred's brothers & sisters have remarked on this. The most likely explanation for this is that the carver had known the family as "Butterfield", although they had been "Taylor" for quite a while. And once carved---.
Alfred died in South Ashburnham, Mass., August 5, 1890. He
was buried in Calvary Cemetery Winchendon, MA. His tombstone says 'BUTTERFIELD', not TAYLOR! And not COUTURIER.
