Frederick Worden entered military service as a First Lieut,with the 3rd Michigan Infantry at its organization in 1861.He was commissioned Captain in Aug. 1861.He then became a Major in the 13th Michigan Infantry in Jan. 1862.Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on July 4,1862,he was forced to resign on account of disability on Feb. 26,1863.Worden's brother was Rear Admiral John Lorimer Worden,who in 1862,commanded the U.S.S. Monitor in the first naval battle of ironclad warships.
