They settled in New Haven by 1861. His name was also written as Pachter or Pacter in the United States. His birth and marriage certificates say Pagter.
In 1860 he immigrated here and naturized, according to the 1900 census (below).
On the 1870 New Haven, New Haven, Connecticut census, I found cigar maker SOLOMAN Pagter, 40, born in Holland; other Pagters: Betsey, 37, Holland; Mary, 15, England; Rosa, 13, New York; Jacob, 11, Massachusetts; Samuel, 9, Connecticut; Mary, 6, Massachusetts; Raphael, 1, Connecticut and Martha, 78, born in Holland.
On the 1880 New Haven, New Haven, Connecticut census, I found cigar maker SOLOMAN Pagter, 51; other Pagters: wife Betsey, 48; sister Mary, 58; sons or daughter: corset factory worker Rosa, 23; cigar maker Jacob, 21; cigar maker Saml, 19; cigar maker Morris, 16; Raful, 11; CLARA, 9; Abie, 6 and John, 5. All the children were born in Connecticut, Soloman and Betsey in the Netherlands and sister Mary in England. sister Mary and wife Betsey's parents were both born in England. They lived next door to the Moses and Sarah Greenbaum family (daughter Flora was 16).
On the 1900 West Haven, Orange Co., Connecticut census, I found assistant manager Jacob Greenbaum, 30, born July 1869 in Connecticut; wife of 8 months Clara B Greenbaum, 29, Sep 1870 in Connecticut and father in law and cigar maker, SOLOMAN Pagter, 70, Feb 1829, born in Holland (as were his parents. He immigrated here in 1860 and naturized Jacob's parents were born in Germany and Clara's were both born in Holland.
On the 1920 New Haven, Connecticut census, I found grocery store manager, Jacob Greenebaum, 49; wife Clara E, 49; daughter Beatrice, 13; brother and factory machinist, Benjamin, 40 and father in law SOLU Pagter (Ancestry indexes Pagan), 90, immigrated in 1855 and naturalized in 1859. They were all born in Connecticut, except for Clara's father, born in Holland (as were his parents). Clara's father was born in Holland and mother in Spain.
It's hard to tell IF his marker says PAGTER or PACTER from the 2012 posted photo.
His brother Abraham was also buried here.
