John Hanson was born in Pennsylvania, Centre County. John's birth age is listed as age 43 and age 51 on different copies of his military records. He is on the 1860 census as age 50 so I am quite certain the birth year of 1810 is correct. On Aug 20th, 1840 he married Sarah Clendennen in West Deer Township, Allegheny Co., Pa. To them were born 8 children: Robert E. 1841-1875, Margaret [Ross]1843-1874, William 1847, James 1849, Eliza J.[Kuhn] 1854-1892, Jesse 1856, Theodore [aka William Hanson Presleigh],1859-1931 and Julia A. Hanson [Bartlett] 1862-1923.

On August 1, 1861 he enlisted at the age of 51 in Pittsburgh, Pa. to serve his country. On Nov 5,1861 he mustered in at Harrisburg, Pa. His occupation was blacksmith and I am sure his skills were greatly needed for the cause of the Union. His son Robert, at age 20 also enlisted. Robert did survive the war. His FAG# is 89718562

John was wounded on May 31, 1862 at the Battle of Fair Oaks and died on June 8, 1862 at Fortress Monroe, Virginia. He was eventually buried at Hampton National Cemetery in Virginia.

John's son Robert also fought at the Battle of Fair Oaks and it is known from military records that letters and papers of John's were given to Robert to take home to his mother, Sarah Hanson.

Rank: Pvt. Co. F., 61st Regiment Pennsylvania Infantry.

He is listed as a blacksmith for the Union Army.

God Bless Our Country and the Men Who Died For It.

John's father is John F. Hanson who died in Iowa and his mother is Margaretta Mills who died abt 1823 in Pennsylvania. Little to no information is known about his parents.

I do have John's military records and pension records.
Cause of death: Vulnus Schopet...gunshot death
Sarah his wife remarried 5 years after his death to John Feeny/Finley/Finlay [final spelling on her will is Finlay].
