On August 1, 1861 he enlisted at the age of 51 in Pittsburgh, Pa. to serve his country. On Nov 5,1861 he mustered in at Harrisburg, Pa. His occupation was blacksmith and I am sure his skills were greatly needed for the cause of the Union. His son Robert, at age 20 also enlisted. Robert did survive the war. His FAG# is 89718562
John was wounded on May 31, 1862 at the Battle of Fair Oaks and died on June 8, 1862 at Fortress Monroe, Virginia. He was eventually buried at Hampton National Cemetery in Virginia.
John's son Robert also fought at the Battle of Fair Oaks and it is known from military records that letters and papers of John's were given to Robert to take home to his mother, Sarah Hanson.
Rank: Pvt. Co. F., 61st Regiment Pennsylvania Infantry.
He is listed as a blacksmith for the Union Army.

John's father is John F. Hanson who died in Iowa and his mother is Margaretta Mills who died abt 1823 in Pennsylvania. Little to no information is known about his parents.
I do have John's military records and pension records.

Sarah his wife remarried 5 years after his death to John Feeny/Finley/Finlay [final spelling on her will is Finlay].
Margaret A. Hanson's[ daughter] birth and death located but not burial site. 1843-1874. Wife of James A. Ross #36139593. and mother of John Z. Ross 1867, Sarah A Ross 1869, and Mary C. Ross 1874.
