The Honorable Harvey Henderson, 77, of Neely Ferry Rd., Waterloo, died Sept. 21, 2008, at his home.

A son of the late Ervin henderson and Lucille Parker Henderson, he was the Mayor of Waterloo, a member of Laurel Hill baptist Church and a US Air Force veteran. After returning to Waterloo from New York, he began working to bring the amenities and infrastructure that he felt his beloved hometown deserved. by speaking with local officials and even visiting Washington, DC, he was able to get a referendum passed (on the second try) to build Waterloo's first elementary school so the children would not have to spend two hours each day on a bus. This was important to him because he felt that travel time could be better spent in the classroom. He was instrumental in the purchase and removation of property which is now used as the Waterloo Town hall. He purchased property for a town baseball field with lights and a recreation center so that local youth could participate in sports and residents would have a place to convene and compete. he also purchased income producing property for the town to generate revenue so that the revitalization could continue. Waterloo continues to reap the benefits of Harvey's vision for the town. Projects that he conceived and initiated are still coming to fruitation, such as new street lights and a mile walking trail.

Surviving is a son, Winston Henderson of Boston, Mass.; a daughter, Andrea Henderson of New York, NY; a brother, Wiley Henderson of Laurens; three sisters, Ola C. Hill of Waterloo, Vera Latimer of Detroit, Mich. and Lucille Gordon of Orangeburg; five granschildren; and a great-grandchild.
