Joseph was a son of John Ebenezer Gettys and Maud Martin. He played number 1 on the tennis team and graduated from Erskine College in South Carolina before enlisting in the US Navy at the outbreak of WWII. After the war he attended graduate school at Duke University and the University of South Carolina, earning masters degrees in education and economics. He moved from Danville, Virginia to central Florida in 1958. Joseph was a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church.
