Edward died during the Second World War of non-battle related injuries or illness somewhere in the northern part of Africa. His headstone lists him as "TEC 3, US Army, World War II."

He was the son of Frank and Anna Stanfel and the grandson of Frank Stanfel, Ursula Knafelc Stanfel, Joseph Strutzel, and Kate Jelenich Strutzel. His younger siblings were James, Ann, Theresa, and Gertrude.

After graduating from Calumet High School, Edward attended what is now the University of Wisconsin-Stout, a polytechnic university. He spent three years there before joining the army.

This appears to be merely a cenotaph. Edward is also listed on the North Africa American Cemetery and Memorial, the record for which may be found here.
