Henrietta was born in Granville, Burlington, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, to Oliver Nelson and Elizabeth Morrison of Massachusetts. Henrietta was able to attend school, but because her family was poor, this education was often funded by the State.

In 1828 or 1829, she married Hezekiah Avery of Troy, Bradford, Pennsylvania. The couple first made their home in Troy. Their children are as follows: Nancy Maria Avery, James Avery (died as a child), Rosanna V. Avery, Sarah Avery (died as a child), Noah Summers Buckley [Bulkley] Avery, Mary Elinor Avery, and John Nelson Avery.

While the family lived in Bradford County, an LDS Missionary by the name of Noah Summer Bulkley (who lived in New York near the Pennsylvania border), began preaching in Bradford County. Henrietta received this message and was baptized, but Hezekiah refused to leave his old religion and did not join the LDS Church.

Near the end of the year of 1840, Henrietta and Hezekiah left Pennsylvania and moved to Exeter, Scott, Illinois. In May 1844 (the same month their youngest child was born), Hezekiah Avery died--leaving Henrietta a widow. Henrietta left Nauvoo within the next few years. In November 1847, she and her children were living in the Mill Branch in Iowa, and she was married to Jacob Hatch on 23 November 1847. She became a part of the Mormon Pioneer movement to Utah when she and her family crossed the plains in 1848. Henrietta received a plot of land in Salt Lake City in 1848. She appears in the 1850 US Census in Salt Lake, Utah. On 25 December 1849, she was married to Hyrum Norton Byington at the same time her daughter Nancy married Hyrum's son Joseph. She and Hyrum Norton Byington later divorced. On 1 Jun 1851 she married Samuel Williams.

She settled in Kanosh, Millard, Utah, near her son Noah and daughter Rosannah. She died 2 December 1880 at Kanosh at the age of 69 years, 8 months, 28 days. She was buried in the Ann Dorrity Field. Her grave marker was later moved to the Kanosh Cemetery. It is not known if her remains were relocated. While in the Kanosh Cemetery, the grave marker was broken by vandals and dumped in a gully some distance from the Kanosh Cemetery. A new memorial was placed in the Kanosh cemetery to honor Henrietta. It read Henrietta Williams, 4 Aug 1812-2 Dec 1880. That memorial was later replaced by the current memorial which reads "Henrietta Nelson Avery, 4 Aug 1812-2 Dec 1880, wife of Hezekiah Avery".

Her obituary in the Deseret News, Volume 29, 15 Dec 1880, pays her this tribute, "She was an exemplary and faithful Saint, and leaves a large family of children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren to mourn her loss."

Her mother Elizabeth Morrison was the daughter of Azuba Shaw and John Morrison. Azuba's parents (Israel and Mary) were among the original proprietors of Egremont, Massachusetts. Henrietta's paternal grandparents are unknown.
