Union Record, Oroville, Saturday, September 23, 1865: "Died. At Dayton, Butte county, California, on the 15th of Sept. 1865, Isaac Coon, aged 43 years. [The subject of this notice was born in Ross Co. Ohio -- emigrated to Coles county, Illinois, when about twenty years of age where he resided until the year 1860, when he came to this State and settled on Little Butte Creek, near Dayton, where he remained until his death. 'Uncle Isaac,' as he was familiarly known, was an honest upright man, in fact he possessed those excellent qualities which characterized a good citizen -- charitable toward his enemies and never deceived a friend. He leaves a wife, four children and a large family relation and many friends to mourn his loss. May he rest in peace.]" Brackets are as they appeared in the newspaper, Ed.

Chico Enterprise, Wednesday, October 7, 1931: "Pioneers Grave Found After Hunt Of Half Century. Ending a search of more than a half century, relatives of Mrs. Susan Coon, who died in a wagon train at Little Antelope Springs near Lovelock, Nevada, have located the grave of the pioneer woman who died at the age of 40 giving birth to Robert M. Coon, now a rancher in the Dayton district. That was on August 11, 1860, and until the grave was found Coon was never certain of the exact place of his birth, though he had information that it was either in Utah, Nevada or California. The discovery was made Sunday by a party headed by S.G. Lewis, local groceryman, grandson of Isaac and Susan Coon, and including Orel Richardson of Chico, grand nephew of the couple; Mrs. Martha E. Lewis, 78, of Dayton, a daughter; Mrs. Frances Duffield of Corning, 82, and Mrs. Mary Jane Richardson of Chico, 77, the latter two nieces. All of the three women are among the few still living who crossed the plains in the wagon train as children. Others still living include Albert William Coon of Dayton, Emmett Coon of Durham, Robert M. Coon of Dayton and Maggie Coon of Chico. Actual discovery of the grave was made by Lewis while other members of the party were inspecting the ground near Little Antelope Spring. Many attempts had been made to locate the grave through the years that have passed through systematic searches of the country all the way from Susanville, California, to Lovelock, Nevada. The grave which was under a juniper tree on a little knoll a short distance from Little Antelope Spring, was identified by a sand stone marker on one side of which was chiseled, 'Susan Coon, wife of Isaac Coon, died August 11, 1860, aged 40 years.' On one side of the stone was carved the words, 'Colds [sic; should read Coles] County, Ill.', indicating the birthplace. The women who had been in the immigrant train when Mrs. Coon died recognized the place of the burial imediately [sic] when they arrived there Sunday and an intensive search soon revealed the lonely grave, although it had been 71 years since they had seen the spot."

Coon Descendants, by Frances Davis McTeer, 1979, (pg. 171): "Isaac Coon, born in Ohio 7 June 1823, died in Butte Co., California, 15 Sept. 1865 aged 42 years 3 months 8 days; married first in Coles Co., Illinois, 23 Oct 1845, Susan McCord, born in Virginia, 9 Feb. 1819, died at Antelope Springs, Utah Territory (now Nevada), 11 Aug 1860. Isaac married second about 1861 as her second husband Sarah (McCord) Freeland who died in Butte Co., 1 April 1878 aged 57 years. Both Isaac and his second wife are buried in Dayton Cemetery, Butte Co."
