Chico Enterprise, Saturday, February 8, 1941: "Robt. M. Coon, Durham Rancher Dies Suddenly. Following a sudden illness, Robert Michael Coon, 80 year old Durham rancher, died at his home in the Durham-Dayton district yesterday. Coon was preceded in death by his 82 year old brother, Albert William, who passed away January 20 at a local hospital. Robert Michael Coon arrived in California at the age of four months, having been born August 9, 1860, in Pershing County, Nev., while his parents were en route west. His mother, who passed away as a result of his birth, was buried on the Immigrant trail and her grave was rediscovered by members of the Coon family in 1931. Take Up Ranching. The Coon family settled in the Dayton district and bought a squatter's rights to land which was later incorporated in the ranch operated by the Coon brothers. Robert Michael Coon, the last man of the family, was a member of Dayton lodge, I.O.O.F. and a past noble grand. He was also a member of the Durham I.O.O.F. lodge and a past noble grand of that chapter, which had been absorbed in the Dayton group. Sister Survives. The deceased is survived by a sister, Mrs. Martha E. Lewis of Dayton, and a nephew, S.G. Lewis, also of Dayton, who was at his bedside when death occurred. Several other nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services under the supervision of the Nugent Funeral home, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday. Graveside services will be conducted by the Durham I.O.O.F."

With many friends in attendance and many floral offerings banking the casket, funeral services were conducted at 10:30 o'clock this morning at the Nugent Funeral Chapel for the late Robert Michael Coon, pioneer resident of Dayton, who passed away at the family home Friday afternoon. His brother, the late Albert W. Coon, passed away January 20 of this year. Rev. Errol B. Sloan, pastor of the Christian church officiated at the services and Mrs. Sloan sang 'Rock of Ages.' Following the services in the chapel final rites were conducted by the Durham Lodge, I.O.O.F. The pallbearers were: J.R. Henderson, H.L. Schnery, James Weldin, D.E. Baker, David Frick and C.A. Schab."

Coon Descendants, by Frances Davis McTeer, 1979, (pg. 173): "Robert Michael [Coon], b. at Antelope Springs, Utah Terr., now Nevada, 9 Aug. 1860, d. in Butte Co., 7 Feb. 1941, buried Dayton Cemetery. Unmarried."

Susannah McCord Coon is the mother of the following Coon siblings interred at Dayton Cemetery: Albert William Coon, America E. Coon, Caroline Panama Coon, Perry Matson Coon, Martha Ellen (Coon) Lewis, Mary Marilda (Coon) Fritter, and Robert Michael Coon. They were reared by her sister Sarah McCord Freeland Coon [31366026] and their father, Isaac Coon. Susannah McCord Coon died on August 11, 1860, en route to California, and is buried Little Antelope Spring, Pershing County, Nevada.
