Ella Dell Gray was born Oct. 15, 1883 in the Scale community of Marshall County Kentucky. She was the third of nine children born to Henry Sylvester Gray and Martha Jane Burnham Gray. She married Archie Clarence Lawhorn on Feb. 16, 1910 in Anderson County Texas. Their only child was Martha Gladys (Dunbar), 1911-2008. Arch was killed on Jan. 21, 1913 and Ella married J. Frank Turrentine in 1920.

Ella's siblings were, Ada Ninval (Williams) 1879-1963, Edward Buell 1881-1975, Frederick Chesterfield 1885-1945, Floyd 1887-1890, Hattie Louisa (Gatewood) 1890-1985, Beulah Mae (Nix) 1894-1980, Maude Salome (Bernard) 1896-1982, and Bonnie Beatrice (Sides) 1902-1983.
