JEROME G. FOULKS

J. G. Foulks, one of Lucas county's early pioneers, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ralph H. Woods, in North Liberty, Indiana, on Friday, October 15, 1937, at the age of 86 years, 6 months and 6 days.

The body was brought to Chariton and funeral services, conducted by Rev. A. E. Beals, of Russell, were held at the Beardsley Funeral Home Monday afternoon at two o'clock. Burial was in the Chariton cemetery by the side of his wife, who preceded him in death on April 10, 1925.

Jerome Grable Foulks, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Foulks, was born in Mansfield, Ohio, on April 9, 1851. At the age of four years, he came to Lucas county, Iowa, with his parents, and for eighty-three years his home had been in this vicinity, in sight of the home his parents made in those pioneer days.

On September 22, 1873, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth C. Willoughby. To this union seven children were born, four of whom have gone on before. Surviving him are two daughters and one son, Mrs. Milo C. Brightwell, Chariton; Mrs. Ralph H. Woods, North Liberty, Indiana; and Harry H. Foulks, Omaha, Nebraska.

He is also survived by one brother, J. W. Foulks, of Hamburg, Iowa, and five grandchildren, Don L. Enslow, Omaha, Nebr.; Kenneth Brightwell, Foster, Oregon; Vesta Bailey, Seattle, Wash.; LaNelle Rinehart, Columbia, Iowa; and Harry H. Foulks, Jr., Omaha, Nebr.; and eight great grandchildren.

His parents, one sister, Mrs. Mollie Lee, and five brothers, Willis, John, Harvey, Harry and George Foulks preceded him in death.

At the time of his death he was one of the oldest settlers in the county and took great pride in his long residence here. He was a good citizen and was ever ready to assist in every worthy cause. He was patient, charitable and cheerful.

In 1874 he united with the church and continued in the Christian faith throughout his life. During his long residence he made a host of warm friends who will mourn his passing.
