UNITY -- Pearl Viola (Gerald) Smith passed away peacefully Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, two days after celebrating her 91st birthday with her family. Pearl was born in Unity on Aug. 27, 1914, the third of William and Mamie Gerald's six daughters.

She graduated from Unity High School and attended Thomas College in Waterville. In 1938, she married Belmont Smith. They raised poultry, livestock, and commercial crops at their farm on Albion Road for more than 40 years. Pearl was passionate about gardening, maintaining her own flower, fruit, and vegetable garden until 89.

She was a life-long member of the Church of Christ and enjoyed spending time with family and friends in Maine and Arizona where she spent several winters of her retirement.

Pearl was predeceased by her parents; her husband; and her sisters, Evelyn Webb, Mildrid Crosby and Thelma Cornforth.

She is survived by her sisters, Doris Hall and Helen Alexander; her daughter, Rosalie Fagan; her son-in-law, Robert; her grandchildren, Lynne Anderson and her husband, Scott, Michael Fagan and his wife, Krista, and great-granddaughter, Trista.

She is also survived by her son, Durward Smith; her daughter-in-law, Joyce; grandchildren, Lisa Bragdon and her husband, Ed, and Bill Smith; great-grandchildren, Mikayla, Jared, Jacob and Damien; as well as their mother, Samantha Locke; and several nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service for immediate family is planned for later in the week.
