Waynesville—Katherine Hyatt McCracken, age 86, of Waynesville, died peacefully Monday, December 17, 2007 at Autumn Care surrounded by her loving family.

A native of Swain County, Mrs. McCracken was the daughter of the late Ralph and Venice Thomas Hyatt. Mrs. McCracken was a member of Waynesville First Baptist Church and had many friends and a close tie with Barberville Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Waynesville Chapter #165 Order of the Eastern Star. She retired from Wellco. "Nanny," a loving wife, Mother, grandmother and sister enjoyed crafts, sewing, and flower gardening. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, E. W. "Pappy" McCracken, who died in 2001; a son, Tom McCracken, who died in 2000; two brothers, Joe and Mack Hyatt; and two sisters, Dorothy Gunter and Josephine Maddox.

Survivors include one loving and faithful daughter, Martha Rector and her husband, Ned, of Waynesville; one sister, Peggy Ball of Bryson City; one brother, Ralph Hyatt, Jr. and his wife, Carrie, of Bryson City; a daughter-in-law, Sue McCracken Oates; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and two step-great grandchildren.

Burial will follow at McCracken Family Cemetery.
