"Granny Gentry" or "Ms. Emm", as she was often referred to as, was born to Z. David McLane and Caroline Taylor McLane. Her headstone, Funeral Arrangement and Obituary all suggest that she was born 23 May 1886, but census records indicate her birth April 1892 or 1897. Other records also show that she was born in Etowah County, but she was first shown in the 1900 U.S. Census living with her parents in Blount County, Alabama. According to some of her grandchildren, her full name was Emily LouEllen McClain.

Emily has not been found in the 1910 U.S. Census, but it is assumed that she married Samuel Gentry around that time, most likely after the 1910 U.S. Census was taken to 1911. After the marriage to Samuel, they proceeded to have eleven known children: Jake Gentry, Junior Gentry, Susie "Sudie" Mae Bama Jane Gentry, Rosa "Rosie" Lee Gentry, Samuel "Johnson" Gentry, Jr., Pearle Gentry, Willard Gilbert Gentry, Lewis Hewitt Gentry, David "Dave" Gentry, Betty Lou Gentry, and Joyce Gloria Gentry.

There are no actual documented records found of Jake or Junior Gentry. According to Rosie Gentry Stacks some years back, Jake and Junior both died as infants before her birth in 1916. The burial location of the two children is unknown as well.

Emily and her family lived in Anniston for the most amount of years, but moved to Etowah County for a short period of time, most likely because she had family there.

In 1937, Samuel Gentry was tragically murdered in Anniston by his son-in-law, James Shumaker, in Anniston, Alabama at Furnace Hill.

After the death of her husband, Emily remarried to Walter Lanford. Records of the marriage are unknown at this time, but proven since they were living together in Atlanta, Georgia at the time of the 1940 U.S. Census. It is assumed that the marriage was short since Emily quickly returned to Anniston, never returning to the name "Emily Lanford" again.

On 23 November 1964, Emily passed away at the home of her daughter, Betty Gentry, leaving behind seven children and a host of more than forty-five grandchildren. She was laid to rest at Pine Grove Cemetery, just a few yards away from her beloved husband.
