Operatic soprano. She was known for her powerful voice and commanding stage presence. After studying music from a young age, Brouwenstijn attended the Amsterdam Conservatory, where she developed her distinctive vocal style. She made her professional debut in 1944, when she sang the role of Pamina in Mozart's The Magic Flute with the Netherlands Opera. She quickly gained recognition for her performances in works by Wagner and Strauss, and was soon performing on some of the world's most prestigious stages. She sang with the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera in London, and the Vienna State Opera, among others. In addition to her work in opera, Brouwenstijn was also known for her performances of lieder and other classical vocal works. She recorded several albums throughout her career, and her recordings of Mozart's operas remain particularly well-regarded. She retired from performing in 1982, but she continued to be active in the world of music. She served as the director of the Amsterdam Opera from 1985 to 1990, and she remained an influential figure in the Dutch music scene. She left behind a legacy as one of the greatest sopranos of the 20th century, and her contributions to the world of opera continue to be celebrated.
