LAKELAND - CDR Archie Gillis McQuagge, Jr., USN, Ret., age 87, passed away at his home at Carpenter's due to heart failure, November 20, 2008.
McQuagge was a fifth generation Florida Cracker, born May 27, 1921 in Vernon, Florida. He lived in Clearwater for 13 years prior coming to Lakeland in September 1938 to attend Florida Southern College where he graduated in 1942. McQuagge was a Methodist, a Mason, Theta Chi, former president of the Florida Southern College Alumni Ass'n, three times served as president of the Lakeland Exchange Club, was a member of the American Legion and DAV, and was a life long Democrat. McQuagge served in the South Pacific during WWII, returning to Lakeland at the end of the war. For over four years, he and his former college roommate, Ed Wilson of Carpenter's Home, Lakeland, were engaged in the ice cream business on South Florida Avenue and at two other Lakeland locations. In 1949, McQuagge was then the second youngest Lakelander to be elected city commissioner. While serving on the first seven-member commission as Mayor Pro Tem, he was recalled to active duty in the Navy during the Korean War, where he remained until his retirement in 1969. Following retirement from the Navy, McQuagge served a year on administrative staff of Florida Southern College, and four years on the Polk County District School Staff, two years as director of purchasing. In the Navy following the Korean War, McQuagge served three times with the Navy Cryptologic Command, twice with NSA, with J2-DIA, was on the staff of Commander-in-Chief, Pacific, was on the staff of the Ninth Naval District, and served overseas tours in Japan, Hawaii, Morocco and temporarily in Taiwan. At the time of his retirement , McQuagge was serving as Assistant Deputy Commander, plans and policy, for the Navy Cryptologic Command, serving the Joint-Chiefs-of-Staff.
McQuagge is survived by his wife of 62 years, the former Betty Joe Crosswy, a Lakeland native; daughter, Suzanne and Dr. Steven Nagy of Auburndale: son, Joel and Lisa McQuagge of Gainesville: a sister, Madge Ulmer of Sarasota and six grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 12noon to 1:00pm, Tuesday at the Gentry-Morrison Funeral Home, Southside Chapel where funeral services will be held that day at 1:00pm. Interment to take place in Oak Hill Burial Park, Lakeland.
