Mary Elizabeth, the daughter of Josiah & Elizabeth (Vance) Hanby, married Benjamin Stone Lyon on 13 Apr 1864 in Harrison Co., OH. Mary & Benjamin had 4 children, Elizabeth Jane, stillborn child 17 Aug, 1869, Ella Minerva and John H. Lyon. Mary came to OK to participate in the Land Run on Apr. 22, 1889. Mary was appointed by the first Governor of the state of Oklahoma, Charles Nathaniel Haskell, to be the first matron to the Comanche, Apache, and Arapaho tribes of Oklahoma. Mary taught them how to read and write.
