Born in Davy, W.Va., on Oct. 19, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Reverend John Matney and Victoria Green-Matney.
She was married for over fifty years to the late Leon Childress (1914-1983) as they made their home in Bradshaw and Oceana, W.Va., and later in Deland, Fla.
Mrs. Childress delighted in her roles as mother, wife, housekeeper and later grandmother. She worked hard to give her family good food, clean clothes, a clean home and lots of love. A private person, Mrs. Childress loved singing and writing poetry. She was baptized into the Toneda Missionary Baptist Church as a teenager and was an active member until moving to Florida after Mr. Childress retired from coal mining. In Deland, she and her husband joined the Stetson Baptist Church. Mrs. Childress was a committed Christian who loved the Lord.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Leon Childress (1914-1983); a beloved son, Richard Kenneth Childress; two brothers, Howard Matney and Edward Matney; and three sisters, Zola Matney-Pittman, Opal Matney-Williams and Dreama Matney-Browning. Her stepmother, Maude Cook-Matney, also preceded her in death.
She is survived by a daughter, Betty Sue Childress-Davidson and her husband, Edsel, of Deland, Fla.; a son, Paul Charles Childress and his wife, Sandy, of Lynchburg, Va.; a daughter-in-law, Sue Blankenship Childress of Spotsylvania Va.; four grandchildren, Teri Davidson of Olympia, WA, Derek Childress of Ashburn Va., Becky Childress Fritz and husband, Alex, of Blacksburg, Va., BethAnne Childress Bort and husband Donovan of Apex, N.C.; six great-grandchildren, Calaway Childress, Cameron Childress, Lauren Fritz, Sydney Fritz, Rachel Bort and Nathaniel Bort; four brothers, Jack Matney and wife, Louise, of Oceana, Aaron Matney and wife, Linda, of Lexington, N.C., Bill Matney and wife, Karen, of Mason Mich., Joe Matney and wife, Phyllis, of Detroit, Mich.; two sisters, Naomi Matney Smith and husband, Bernard, of Albany, Ga., and Sue Matney Sadwin and husband, Arnold, of Cherry Hill N.J. A special nephew, David Mayberry and wife, Joy, of Oceana and many dozens of other friends, nephews, nieces and their children survive her.
Service will be 11 a.m., Saturday, June 23, 2007, in the Evans Memorial Chapel with the Rev. James A. Hamrick officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.
