Service record indicates the following:Adda Smith enlisted on Dec 10, 1863 at Craney Island, VA, at age 31 into Company H, 10th US Colored Infantry. He was born free in Norfolk County, VA and was a farmer. He deserted June 19, 1865 at Portsmouth, VA. He appears on Muster Out Roll for the regiment dated Galveston, TX, May 17, 1866. His desertion was removed by certificate from the Adjutant General dated Feb 5, 1887. PVT Adda Smith was present with his unit at the siege of Plymouth, NC; Butler's Bermuda Hundred Campaign; and occupied Richmond Va following its fall in April 1865. In June 1865, the 10th USCT was sent to the Rio Grande region in Texas to guard the Mexican border against incursions by Emperor Maximillian's troops. PVT Smith may have deserted because he felt he had done his duty, the war was over, and did not want to leave Virginia for post-war duty in Texas.
