When Magarity had about 100 volunteers, he led the Woodford County company to Peoria, Illinois, where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. On August 27, 1862, Magarity and 95 of his volunteers were mustered into service as Co. G of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Magarity was elected their Captain.
Just five weeks after they were mustered into service, the men of the 86th were in the field and participated in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, where they suffered their first casualties. After the Union victory at Perryville, the Confederate troops withdrew from Tennessee. McCook's Brigade, of which the 86th was a part, then slowly worked their way toward Nashville, Tennessee, arriving there about the 9th of December of 1862. There the men of McCook's Brigade went into winter camp.
During the winter and spring of 1862/63, approximately 300 men of the 86th Illinois got so sick that they either died or were discharged from the service in the hope that they could return to their homes and regain their health. In the late Spring of 1863, Pvt. John Lehman got quite ill and was sent to an Army Hospital. The Physicians did all they could but on June 15, 1863, John finally sucumbed to his illness and he was buried in a Union burying ground in Nashville. Shortly after the Civil War, his earthly remains were transferred to the Nashville National Cemetery.
