------------
Joseph Martin was the older, and the only brother to John Martin my great great grandfather. I know of six Martin kids who along with their parents William & Sarah (Arms) Martin left their homeland of England around 1847. They set sail for London to Quebec. Then they moved to Burlington, Chittenden County, Vermont. I have their father's naturalization papers from July 1857 where he states his age at 54 and that he was from Holbeach, Lincolnshire England. Soon after that, the family moved to the Chicago area.

Up until last week, I had assumed that Joseph was a civil war vet, and that our branch had simply lost track of him. Unfortunately, the evidence shows that he was actually a civil war casualty. It must have been hard on his parents to come to a new world and loose a son to fifteen years later in a war over an institution that they had not been apart of creating. His mother died just a year and a half later, and I wonder if the loss of her son played a role in her demise.

In the 1860 census Joseph was single. His military records listed him as married in 1862. I know nothing about his marriage, nor if he had any children. I think there was a record of a widow's pension, but I have not ordered the microfish on him...

Finally, I will add that Joseph's brother, John -- my direct ancestor, eventually moved to Kansas (around 1873) and married Helen Catharine "Kittie" (Hawkins) Martin. He named his second child by her: Josephine Pearl Martin. My grandma always told me that Josephine got her name from the feminine name of Joseph and that Joseph was the only brother John had.

I feel glad that at least in findagrave, he is reunited with his family. Joseph may you eternally rest in peace...
