Born Nettie Lee Chester, she later changed her name to Grace Jeanette. She was the second of the 13 children of William Thomas "Tom" Chester and his wife Cora Isabelle Stephenson.

On January 16, 1902, in Cordell, Washita, Oklahoma Territory, Grace married James Iver Stewart who was born June 29, 1874 in Keokuk, Iowa. The couple's only child, Ivor Neal Stewart, was born in Foss, Oklahoma Territory on October 29, 1903.

Grace and James divorced when Neal was very young. James was living in Wichita, Kansas when he filled out his WWI draft registration and he later married Henrietta "Retta"(Stanton) Morris and lived the rest of his life in Houston, Texas where he died in 1943. Retta and her first husband, Joseph "Calvin" Morris had eight children before he died in 1907. Retta and James had no children and she died in 1962 in Cowlitz County, Washington where she is buried.

Grace married Timothy Murphy sometime after his first wife Jennie A. Hollis died in 1929. Tim and Jennie had five children, two of whom died young.
