Donald Herbert Rhyne Sr. of Port Angeles died December 5 in Port Angeles at age 81 from congestive heart failure.

He was born to Frank and Maude Rhyne in Pe Ell, Washington, on September 29, 1927.

He attended schools in Pe Ell and Raymond, Washington, and also Tillamook, Oregon, then joined the Army in 1945.

In 1946, he married wife, Mercedes, from Fessenden, North Dakota. They moved to Forks in 1951 to log after the big Forks fire.

There, he partnered with friend Jack Edwards, forming Edwards and Rhyne Logging Co., and he served on the Town Council.

Owning Don Rhyne Logging Co. he built several shops, while he most enjoyed building logging roads.

Upon moving his family to Port Angeles in 1969, he briefly owned Atlas Trucking, begun by brother Alfred Rhyne, co-owned Peninsula Timber Company and Tree Logging, and managed Hyosung Unipak Log Yard.

He was Clallam County Logger of the Year in 1996, jointly with Jack Edwards.

Also, he was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Order of the Eastern Star, and served as a Rainbow Dad.

After his retirement, he and Mercedes spent many winters in Hemet, California, and Yuma, Arizona.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years; his daughters, Bonnie Jean Rhyne, of Buckley, Washington, and Penny Ann Oakes (husband Rick Oakes), of Eugene, Oregon; and son, Don Rhyne Jr. of Port Angeles; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by daughter Cindy Lee Rhyne; sister, Doris Laymon; and brothers, Robert Rhyne and Alfred Rhyne.

Graveside burial will be Thursday, December 11, at 11 a.m., at Claquato Cemetery, 142 Stearns Rd., Chehalis, Washington.
