Freeman leased 25,000 acres from Sir Robert Burnett. Unfortunately, in 1874 Catherine Freeman died. Freeman sent for his sister to help him raise his children. Sir Burnett was then called back to Scotland which gave Freeman the opportunity to buy the property (now known as the cities of Westchester, Inglewood and El Segundo). He eventually became a Centinela Valley Land developer. He died in 1918.
His heir, daughter Grace Howland, deeded nine acres to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet for the building of a hospital to be named in honor of her father. She continued to live in the Freeman mansion until her death in 1956, upon which she deeded the rest of the Freeman estate to the Sisters.
