Mary Ann emigrated with her family from the port of Le Havre, France in June, 1946. This was a time of substantial emigration of Swiss farmers who preferred rural settlements in the Midwestern United States. The Leist family arrived in New York on the ship South Carolina on August 29, 1846.
In 1850 the Leist family were residing in the town of Etna, a small community in Licking County east of Columbus, Ohio. Along with her parents and two of her sisters, Mary Ann moved to Van Wert County, Ohio sometime before October 1855. This is known because Mary Ann's older sister, Elizabeth "Lizzie", married George Mohr in October 1855 in Hoaglin Township of that county. On September 30, 1856 Mary Ann married George Mohr's brother, Christian, in Hoaglin Township.
Mary Ann and Christian had 10 children, 4 boys and 6 girls. One girl, Catherine, died at birth. They spent the remainder of their lives on a 160-acre farm in Section 16 of Hoaglin Township. They were of the German Methodist faith and worshipped at the Grand Victory Evangelical (Association) Church that Christian's father helped to establish.
Marianne "Mary Ann" (Leist) Mohr died on February 13, 1891 at the age of 50. Christian Mohr died on February 2, 1902 at the age of 72. They are both buried in the Mohr Cemetery in Hoaglin Township, on land purchased by Christian's father in 1862.
