John Welborn Key was the son of Joel Martin Key and Nancy Welborn Terrell. He was born on 4 Nov 1840 in Elberton, Elbert County, Georgia. He was living with his parents in 1860. When the Civil War broke out, he became a Confederate Soldier (Division: Cavalry; Company: B; Regiment: Pulaski County, Arkansas.) After the war, John Welborn Key married Katherine Keith Simpson Key (born 1843 - died 1923) on 21 Dec 1869 in Desoto County, Mississippi. Together they had ten children: Ira Terrell Key, Eugenia Key, Nancy Evaline Key, Willett Flemming Key, Mattie Key, Emma Key, Kate Keith Key, Sallie Lipscomb Key, Shelton Oliver Martin Key, and John Wilbur Key. The first six children were born in Mississippi and the last four were born in Arkansas. In 1870 he was farming in DeSoto County, Mississippi. In 1880 he was farming in Hogan, Franklin County, Arkansas. In 1900 he was farming in Amity, Clark County, Arkansas. John Welborn Key died on 28 Feb 1920 in Caddo, Bryan County, Oklahoma.
