Bessie was the fourth of five children, and the only daughter, of Alexander & Alice Jane (Brewer) Frasier. Her father was a farmer, and a very strict man.

At 19, on Oct. 17, 1905, Bessie married a neighbor, Alfred Walter Brown, with whom she had five children, four of whom survived to adulthood. Theirs was not a happy marriage and in the mid-1920's, Bessie left Alfred and their son, Joy. She took their three daughters and got a divorce on 27 March 1929.

She later married Lewis Henry "Baldy" Walters, but she was always called "Grandma Brown" by her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
