Mr. James William (Jimmy) Tompkins, age 65, of Route 5, Wilmington (Myrtle Sound), died unexpectedly Thursday morning at his residence.
Mr. Tompkins was born on August 13, 1912 in Pender County, N.C. and was the son of the late Walter J. and Mary Ramsey Tompkins. he was employed as a maintenance mechanic at UNCW. Mr. Tompkins was a member of the Myrtle Grove Advent Christian Church.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Alma Lewis Tompkins of the home; three sons, James Edward Tomplins of Sumter, S.C., Walter W. Tompkins of Rocky Point, N.C., and Robert A. Tomplins of Rocky Point, N.C.; two daughter, Mrs. John (Dorothy) rouse of Fort Myers, Fla., and Mrs. Tom (Teresa) Downey of Columbus. Ohio; three stepsons, John W. Rouse of Fort Myers, Fla., Donnie H. Rouse of Wilmington and Harry R. Rouse of Fort Worth, Texas; a stepdaughter, Ms. Glenn R. (Kitty) Sasser of Wilmington; two brothers, W. Ed Tompkins of Wilmington and Robert C. "Buster" Tompkins of Titusville, Fla.; three sisters, Mrs. Raymond (Katie) Best of Wilmington, Mrs. David (Mary) Holly of Rocky Point, N.C., and Mrs. Manuel (Lavaun) Cobos of Ventura, Calif., and 21 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Myrtle Grove Advent Christian Church with the Rev. Bruce D. Blake and the Rev. Linwood Rowe officiating. Interment will follow int he Horne Cemetery.
Casketbearers will be H.G. Groham, Ethner Mallard, Mike Green, Louis Horn, J.E. Hansley, Norwood Rivenbark, Ben Horne and Murphy Southerland.
Honorary bearers will be Joe Bolash, I.J. King, Mark Mintz, Thomas Sidbury, Jimmy Michaels, Marion Moody, John Haney, Elgin Langston, Will Whitson, E.H. Rhodes and George James.
