Obituary for Zilpha A. Coward Lyons, Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana Submitted by Jan Craven

Source: Echo: April 24, 1880.

Died: Lyons - At the residence of her son, Sam Lyons at Big Woods, Calcaseiu parish, LA, on Thrusday, April 22, 1880 at 7 o'clock p.m. Zilpha A. Coward, wife of David H. Lyons, aged 46 years.

The sympathies of the entire community will be strongly aroused by the above notice. Just a month and a day before her death the deceased and her husband (sheriff of Calcaseiu parish) were bereaved, at Lake Charles, of their son Erastus J. Lyons, aged 17 years. Perhaps to assuage their grief, the parents went to the country, and there on the 11th inst., death claimed their son Ofutt Lyons, aged 12 years.

Leaving this fresh scene of sorrow, they went to the residence of their eldest son, Sam Lyons at Big Woods and thither the death angel followed, and two days ago called the wife and mother away from all earthly trouble.

The deceased was a descendant of one of the oldest and most respected settlers of our parish, and possessed, in addition to a kind, benevolent and affectionate disposition, most extraordinary qualities of firmness and heroism, qualities which she frequently displayed in trying situations connected with her husband's official position as sheriff. She was indeed a tower of strength unto her husband and the sympathy previously awakened for him, by the death of his two boys, is now in tensified (sic) by the death of the beloved partner.

NOTE: Zilpha Ann Coward was the daughter of Richard Adderson Coward (s/o Hardy Coward and Elizabeth Bates) and Harriett Buckner Smith. Source: Will of Richard Adderson Coward. Zilpha Coward Lyons is buried at Big Woods Cemetery.
