Church one year before in the face of severe persecution that witnessed her Uncle given forty lashes and imprisoned twenty four days on bread and water.
On June 12, 1882, with her mother and brother Nils she sailed from Sweden and arrived in Utah July 10, 1882, where she was met by her father who had emigrated the previous year. She first met Andrew M. Neilson at Murray, Utah, and they were married June 21, 1885, receiving their endowments May 31, 1893. In the latter year she attended the dedication of the Salt Lake Temple and she often spoke of witnessing a sudden brightness that filled the assembly room except for a few feet near each wall while Joseph F. Smith was speaking; a brightness that many there said they did not see.
After hearing glowing accounts of the beautiful Star Valley in Wyoming, they traded their new home in Sandy, Utah, for a team of horses and a wagon and after nine days enroute they arrived and settled at Afton September 9, 1889. This valley they made their permanent home and in spite of all hardships and privations of pioneer life, neither would leave or ever consent to live anywhere else.
To their union were born eleven children, six of whom, Emel A Neilson, Rearl Millward, Alma E. Neilson, Wilford W. Neilson, Leland J. Neildson and Elve Vail, survive . She is also survived by thirty-five grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren, many of whom she attended at birth and who are included in the grand total of seventy-three mid-wifery cases that she attended. most of which were in her pioneer days and without the services of a doctor or even menial help.
She was faithfully cared for in her last illness by her daughters Pearl Millward and Elva Vail and by her daughter-in-law Mrs Leland J. Neilson.
Burial was in the Afton Cemetery.
Those attending the funeral of Johanna C. Neilson from outside of Star Valley were Mr and Mrs Emil Neilson and children, Don and Donna of Salt Lake City; Mr and Mrs C. B. Millward and daughters Ursel, Shirley, Dawn and Sharlene; Mr and Mrs Charles Nelson and children Wyla, Fred and Janice, all of Pocatello, Idaho; mr and Mrs Joseph T.
