Death of Mr. Jacob Erb
It is our sad duty to chronicle the death of our esteemed friend and good citizen which occurred on Wednesday evening, July 25, 1883, at 4 o'clock p.m. at his residence near Pine Grove Mills, Ferguson Township, this county, at the great age of almost four score and ten, the oldest man of our township. Mr. Erb had two slight paralytic strokes about a year ago, but had recovered entirely of the effect and was in usual health up to within ten days of his death ; when his appetite failed him, and he complained of pain and general disability, but no serious results were anticipated, as he was able to sit in his easy chair until a few minutes before his death, when he was persuaded to lay down on his bed, after which he died in a few minutes.

Just eighteen years ago, his wife, Elizabeth preceded him to their future and eternal home beyond the vale of sickness and sorrow. Since that time he calmly contemplated the end patiently waiting its coming. During is last illness and suffering, he expressed the fullest confidence in the couenant (sic) promises of God and as the supreme hour approached he felt prepared for the great conflict that ended his work. Thus he passed away peacefully with a struggle to his final reward. Then fell upon the once happy home a sudden gloom for one who had died. Who, for many years had been the joy of those around him. Mr. Erb was a man of very simple habits, and had many warm friends--those who had the pleasure of his acquaintance, loved him most. He posessed a noble and true spirit. No one ever went to him in distress that were turned away empty handed. He had a kindly feeling towards everybody ; and his amiable disposition made him admirable by all with whom he came into contact. In his death, the family have lost a loving and indulgent father, the relatives a sincere friend, and the community one of the noblest and best citizens.

The deceased was born in York County, this state, on the 27th day of September 1796. He was of German descent; his father having emigrated from Germany, and located in York County, where Jacob spent his youthful days. He also served considerable time on the high sea as a sailor. At the age of 28 he married Miss Elizabeth Baumbarger, the fruit of this union were twelve children, seven sons and five daughters. Three having died in their infancy and the rest are all married and scattered over different states. Mrs. Corothers, having died some twenty years ago, and leaving a family of children and in whose welfare the old gentleman took great interest. One of the sons resides in California, one in Wisconsin, one in Iowa; one daughter married and lives in Likentown, Pa., two sons reside in Western Pennsylvania; one daughter married and lives in Centre County and the youngest son, D. B. Erb lives on the old homestead with whom the old gentleman had his home in his declining years. On him will fall the responsibility of his father's mantle. The funeral took place on Friday the 27th instant, at one o'clock from his late residence amid a large circle of friends and neighbors. Mr. Erb was a member of the Lutheran church for a number of years. HIs ministerial friend, J. A. Koser? conducted the services, and paid a tribute to the departed in brief, but touching address. The deceased was a member of Boalsbug Lodge I. O. of O. F. for forty years, and later Pennvalley Lodge No. 276, I. O. of O. F. but by his own request he was dropped from membership some four years ago. Therefore, he was not buried with the rights of the order. Peace be to his ashes. -W. **

There was another daughter, Anna Maria Erb, who first married an unknown Koons, and had two children, then she married William Carothers and had about seven more children. Anna Maria's date of death and burial place are unknown.
