Death of William Beethe – was sick for but one week.

Had lived on the same farm for fifty three years
Elk Creek, Neb, March 23. William Beethe, a longtime resident of this section and one of our most respected citizens, died at the family home, three miles southwest of Elk Creek, at 9;00, last Monday evening, March 20, 1922. Mr. Beethe had been afflicted with diabetes for some two years, but had been up and about, assisting his son with work in fence making as late as Monday of last week. He became sick at that time, but not seriously so until about Friday. A physician called and stated Mr. Beethe was suffering with pneumonia.
William Beethe was born at Shaumberg, Cook County, not far from Chicago, Illinois January 18, 1859. With his father and mother, the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Beethe, he came to Nebraska when he was nine years old, the family making a short stop at Brownville, and then coming on to this section. Mr. Beethe had lived on the farm where he died all this time, fifty-three years. Mr. Beethe was married to Miss Caroline Bartels of Pawnee County, June 19, 1890. Five children were born to this union, four girls and one boy, and all are living. They are, in the order of their ages, Amanda, now the wife of George H. Johnson living east of Elk Creek; Rosa, Minnie, Robert and Alda, living at home. Besides the wife and children Mr. Beethe is survived by three brothers and two sisters, all residents of this neighborhood. They are August, Herman and Charles Beethe and Mrs. Louis Watterman and Mrs. John Gottula. There are three grandchildren.
Mr. Beethe was a most successful farmer and livestock man. His crops and stock were invariably as good as could be found in the neighborhood. He was a splendid gentleman, a loving husband and father, and a considerate neighbor. Mr. Beethe was a member of the Lutheran Church west of Elk Creek.
The funeral was held at the church mentioned, Thursday afternoon at 2:00, and was largely attended by relatives and neighbors and other friends. There were many handsome floral offerings. The service was conducted by the pastor of the church, Rev. H.F. Grupe, and the interment was in the cemetery near the church.
