Engel was born in the village of Todenmann in Lower Saxony, Germany. Engel's parents were Hans Heinrich Büthe, and Sophia Achilles. Engel's mother died soon after her birth due to complications 1843, at the age of 17. Engel had a brother named William who was born and died in 1841. Engel was motherless until her father married Wilhelmina Louise Freise. Engel later had several half-siblings. As a child, Engel and her family moved to America. After the emigration, the family name changed from Büthe to Beethe.

In 1863, Engel married Johan Heinrich Karl Christoph "Christoph" Hitzemann.

Engel was the mother of Heinrich Fredrich, William, Christoph Karl, Anna Maria Louise, Karl Ludwig Gustav, and Emil Herman, as well as a couple of children that died at birth.
