Art Collector, philanthropist, Medical Doctor: Claribel Clone was born to immigrant parents, Herman and Helen Cone. She graduated with the 1890 class of the Women's Medical College of Baltimore. Though she lived in Baltimore, Maryland she spent much of her years traveling in Europe and living in Paris, France. Along with her sister Etta Cone, Claribel Cone developed one of the greatest collections of art in the world of early 20th century European Art. They were friends with Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas, Henri Matisse and Picasso. The sisters would purchase art works when the artist were falling on bad times. Over time the also collected works by Gaugain, Vincent Van Goah, and Paul Cezanne. Their collection includes modern American art as well as decorative arts of textile, jewelry, and furniture. Their benefactor in purchasing these works of art were their brothers Moses H. Cone and Caesar Cone. The Baltimore Art Museum Collection houses more than 3,000 pieces of art which they collected. Included are more than 500 pieces from Matisse. Another part of their collection is at the University of North Carolina - Greensboro in North Carolina. The Cone collection is valued at over one billion dollars.
