33rd Governor of Rhode Island. In addition to serving as governor of Rhode Island, he was the ancestor of several governors and congressmen from that state, including his sons, grandson, great-grandson, and great-great-grandson. He served as Lieutenant Colonel of the Providence Marine Corps of Artillery. During the Civil War, he was Commissioner of Providence County, enrolling and drafting soldiers as called for by Abraham Lincoln. He owned several textile mills, a bleaching and dying company, was a president or vice president of several Rhode Island banks, and was an officer in several other manufacturing and land-related businesses. He succeeded a republican in the office of governor, was a Republican himself, and was then succeeded by another Republican.
