James was the son of Anna Huxham and Dr. James Paddock. He went to Craftsbury, VT in 1793 after a course of medical lectures located at North Craftsbury. He met and married there, Augusta Crafts, on November 14, 1796. They had 2 children: James Augustus and William Ebenezer.
