Jasper was the son of Hiram Compton and Janney Shannon. He married Mary Pigg. Jasper and Mary were the parents of Felix Napoleon "Pole" Compton, Martha Jane Compton Dooley, Caroline Compton, and James Horn Compton.

Jasper was a farmer until the Civil War called upon him to serve. He was in the 39th Kentucky Infantry, Co B, which was organized in Peach Orchard, Kentucky on 18 November, 1862 and mustered on 16 February 1863. The men saw action near Piketon, KY, Wireman's Shoals, big Sandy River and in an area near Prestonsburg in Floyd Co., KY.

He died of disease at the Aldine Union Hospital (a hotel) in Ashland, KY. He was first buried in Ashland, then reinterred in New Albany National Cemetery. There is a note in the cemetery burial records that his stone was purchased with his own money per his request.
