Carrie Mays was born near De Berry in Panola County, Texas in 1866. She was the daughter of Alice Pauline Starnes and John Matthew Mays who moved to Texas in 1866 from South Carolina. She became ill in a Yellow Fever epidemic that hit Texas in 1871, and died along with her mother in December of that year at the age of five years. She is buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery with her mother. The original stone that marked her grave deteriorated over the years, and a large Monument was placed on her grave in the 1930/40s likely by her brother, Robert Meade Mays who became a successful businessman in Shreveport, Louisiana.
