Sculptor. He was a British sculptor of the early 19th century, renowed for his church memorials. Born in London, the son of a Hanoverian pianoforte maker, he grew up in Dublin, Ireland and studied art at the Dublin Academy before travelling to London, in 1813. He trained at the Royal Academy School as a painter and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1815, winning several medals, including a Society of Arts gold medal for inventing an instrument to assist sculpture work. In 1837, he was appointed Sculptor-in-Ordinary to Queen Victoria. He produced many celebrated church monuments and statues, including Sir Robert Peel, Sir Joshua Reynolds, George Cruikshank and Thomas Arnold in St Paul's Cathedral and Westminister Abbey and Major-General Sir Henry Havelock which is situated in Trafalgar Square, London. One of his pupils was the eminent sculptor, G.F.Watts.
