On Friday, 14 December 1832, Lieutenant Paine, late of the frigate Constitution, testified at a court of inquiry in the case of Lieutenant Robert B. Randolph, who was dismissed from the service in 1833. Paine served on the Peacock, at least during 1833.
On 12 April 1853, he was promoted to Commander. On 13 September 1855 he was placed on the reserved list as established by the Law of 1855. He was reactivated during the Civil War, and served in Boston, but soon returned to the Reserved List, as Captain, on 9 June 1862.
