Patrick H. Devine, on of Delaware county's oldest and most successful farmers, died at his home on Friday evening, March 2, 1923, after a short illness.

Mr. Devine had been in poor health for several years, but his final illness was of a short duration. He was born in County Kildare, Ireland, on March 25, 1844, and came to this country at the age of six years with his parents. They settled in New Jersey, later removing to a farm near Delhi. Mr. Devine was a resident of Hazel Green township for twenty years and 1899 purchased a farm in Adams township, where the balance of his life was spent.

On Feb. 13, 1872, he was married to Miss Catherine Mulvehill of Masonville, and she survives him. They were the parents of seven children, two daughters preceding him in death. Those remaining are John, Patrick, Mrs. A.L. Lyness, Susie, James, and Will, all living at or in the vicinity of the old home.

Mr. Devine was an intelligent and progressive type of citizen. His disposition was cheerful, and even when his health was failing, he always had pleasant work and jokes for his friends and acquaintances. He was upright and honest in all of his dealings, a faithful member of the Catholic church, and it is hoped that he is now enjoying the reward allotted by God to those who keep his commandments. The bereaved widow and children have the sympathy of the community in their sorrow.

The funeral was held Monday morning from St. Patrick's church, and was attended by an immense throng of people. Rev. M.S. Murphy celebrated a mass of requiem and delivered the sermon. Rev. John O'Donnell of Monti was in the sanctuary. The remains were taken to Calvary cemetery for interment, and the pallbearers being T. J. King, john Harrington, James McGuire, Less Lyness, M.J. Ryan, and Pat McDonald.
