A 1940 graduate of Mississippi State University in Business Accounting and a Kappa Sigma brother, Lem became a U.S. Naval Officer during WWII and received several commendations. Lem was honorably released to inactive duty in December 1945. Lem served on the US naval ships Notre Dame and North Western. Following the Navy, Lem became a criminal investigator for the Office of Special Investigations of the U.S. Air Force. Lem had 35 total years service with the U.S. government, retiring in December 1979 as Regional Administrator for LMSA in Atlanta. During his service with the U.S. Department of Labor, Lem received numerous meritorious awards and promotions.
Lem and Grace moved to Destin to retire in 1991, where he enjoyed surf fishing on the Emerald Coast and traveling the world.
