Diem, Henry (July 15, 1859-Feb. 2, 1942 –husband of Mary Anna Durst [married May 27, 1890 at St. Gregory Catholic Church in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton] –son of George Diem and Barbara Bretcher –born New York, New York –moved with his parents and siblings to the St. Nazianz area in 1869 –farmer in Town of Eaton until his marriage in 1890 –“Henry was employed by William Christel, General Store in St. Nazianz. His job was hauling freight by horses and wagon or sled from Manitowoc to the store. This trip probably took 2 days, so he may have had to stay overnight. He hated the winter months because of the cold ride. Later the train came through Valders, so he didn’t have so far to travel. Christel also owned a canning factory in St. Nazianz, so later Henry was employed there. He also worked as a janitor at St. Gregory Catholic Church. He spoke of making and hauling wood for the church. The wood needed to be hauled into the basement where there were lots of tunnels and turns. It took a lot of wood to heat the large church.” –from the genealogy notes of Ray and Carolyn Diem –moved to the St. Nazianz area about 1870 –on June 25, 1897 Henry purchased the house at 105 West Court in St. Nazianz from his widowed father-in-law Jacob Durst –in the 1900 census for the Town of Eaton Henry and Mary Ann Diem (and their sons William and Henry) are shown living in this house with Jacob Durst and Jacob’s sibling Notburga and Xavier Durst –by the 1905 state census for the Town of Eaton, Henry and Mary Anna are shown living in a new house built next to the original house at 105 West Court with their sons Willian [age 12] and Henry [age 5] –shown in this census as remaining in the original house on this lot were Jacob Durst and his unmarried siblings Notburga and Xavier –after Jacob’s death on Aug. 19, 1908, this original house was razed –on Sept. 19, 1914 Henry and Mary Ann exchanged their house at 105 West Court for a farm at 14803 County X east of School Hill, Town of Meeme owned by Anton Bushman and his wife Rose Diem –died from “apoplexy –arteriosclerosis”) –buried at St. Gregory Catholic Cemetery in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton [buried in Section 3, Row 1, Lot 3 –stone] [marriage record Manitowoc 6-42] [death record Manitowoc 35-35]
