Graham was just 18, and living in Earlville, Delaware Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Corporal in Co. B of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Sept. 25, 1861. He was mustered into federal service on Nov. 23, 1861. Along with most of the others in the regiment, he became a "reenlisted veteran" on Dec. 14, 1863.
During his term of service, he was reduced in rank to Private on Aug. 1, 1862, reason not known. He was again promoted to 5th Corporal on Dec. 15, 1864, and then to 4th Corporal May 1, 1864.
He mustered out of the service with the rest of his company on Aug. 8, 1865, in Atlanta.
