Vernon C. McCulley, 97, of What Cheer, died Mon., Jan. 2, 2006, at the Pleasant Park Estates in Oskaloosa.
He was born on June 15, 1908, in rural Thornburg, the son of John H. and Catherine Capehart McCulley. He was the oldest of fourteen children. He was raised in rural Thornburg and attended the Greenview Country School and later graduated from the Thornburg High School in 1926. He was united in marriage to Lena Irene Ladley on Jan. 19, 1932 at the Methodist Church in Lancaster, MO. They spent their lives farming in the What Cheer area. He retired at the age of 65 due to health problems. They spent the rest of their retirement traveling, visiting long lost relatives, and wintering in Texas for 30 years.
He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Lenora Coulter of New Sharon and Phyllis Greshan of Washington state; two brothers, Donald and Robert; two sister, Jean Williams and Helen James;seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Neva Allen; six brothers, an infant, Marvin, William, Kenneth, David and Harlan; and three sisters, Elizabeth Acord, Margaret Sampson and Catherine Agnes McCulley.
Funeral services were held Fri., Jan. 6 at the Harden Funeral Chapel in What Cheer with Richard McCulley officiating. Burial was in the Sixteen Cemetery near Thornburg.
